Echinodorus 'Hot Pepper' was bred in the former aquatic plant nursery ZooLogiCa (Altlandsberg near Berlin) by crossbreeding E. 'Red Flame' and E. 'Kleiner Baer' . It was brought onto the market in 2003, however, it is not easily available in trade.
The special characteristic of this variety are its bright light and dark red leaves with contrasting light green longitudinal veins and a slightly undulate margin.
'Hot Pepper' is described as smaller variety that is a suitable foreground plant. Its leaf blades grow to a length of up to 20 cm, a width of 3 cm, and have a short stalk (Kasselmann 2010), however, it can also reach an overall height of up to 40 cm. (www.heimbiotop.de).
Its emersed leaves have a long stalk, oval to lanceolate leaf blades, and new emersed leaves are orange.
