Watermeals of the genus Wolffia are the smallest flowering plants in the world. They have an extremely simplified rootless roundish vegetation body often under a millimetre in size.
Wolffia arrhiza is distributed in Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia and South America (near Rio de Janeiro), from tropical to temperate climates. In Germany it is mainly found in the area of the rivers Spree and Havel and in the lower reaches of the Weser river. This watermeal can be found in stagnant waters protected from wind, and frequently together with duckweed species of the genera Lemna and Spirodela).
