Azolla pinnata, or feathered mosquito fern, is widely spread in tropical to temperate regions in Asia as well as in Africa, Madagascar and Australia. This floating plant mainly grows in stagnant nutrient-rich waterbodies in full sun, like ponds, lakes and rice paddies.
A. pinnata is traditionally used as green manure in rice paddies in Asia.
It is a very variable species. Some authors subdivide it into varieties, some of them are consideren by species in their own right by others.
A. pinnata can be kept in the aquarium as a floating plant very well as long as it gets sufficient light and the water contains a high level of nutrients.
