Swamp stonecrop, or Crassula helmsii, is one of the few plants from the large Crassulaceae family. Most of its members are succulent plants adapted to dryness like those of the genera Sedum (stonecrop) or Sempervivum (houseleeks).
C. helmsii is widely spread in Australia and New Zealand. It has been brought to other continents as ornamental plant. In some places it has escaped into the wild. In England, C. helmsii has become an invasive neophyte that reproduces explosively, outpopulating native aquatic plants. Unlike in its natural habitat, it also grows in rapidly flowing water as well as in lakes with alkaline water down to a depth of three metres. C. helmsii is very tolerant towards many different environmental conditions.
