Elodea nuttallii is a waterweed from North America introduced to Europe and still spreading. It is not as well-known as Canadian waterweed (E. canadensis) yet, however, it is found more frequently in many places e.g. in Germany. E. nuttallii is an invasive aquatic plant with a strong tendency to develop massive populations. It grows in various waterbody types, even in those with an excessive level of nutrients.
In trade it is usually not sold as aquarium plant but (supposedly as Elodea canadensis) as a plant for garden ponds. It can be discerned from E. canadensis by its longer leaves that spiral slightly, amongst other characteristics.
In the aquarium, E. nuttallii tolerates temperatures of over 20 °C better than E. canadensis, and its growth rate is a little slower.
