Fontinalis hypnoides is a very widely spread aquatic moss in the northern hemisphere. It has only been found in few places in Germany, though. This aquatic moss grows only submersed, mainly in stagnant or slow-flowing waters.
In comparison with the more common willow moss, Fontinalis antipyretica, F. hypnoides has a much finer, more delicate, softer structure. The leaves are smaller, narrower, they are not longitudinally folded and hardly arched.
The shoots of F. hypnoides ramify strongly and, by and by, form decorative dark green bushes.
