Lagarosiphon madagascariensis, a plant Takashi Amano often used in his Nature Aquarium layouts in former times, originates from Madagascan waters.
L. madagascariensis is a very fast grower, given that its keeper meets its demands. It requires warm, soft water rich in CO2. The latter is crucial for optimal growth. It also needs sufficiently intensive light (approx. 0.75 watts per litre or above), as it is a very light-hungry plant. The water ought to be rich in macro- and micronutrients: NO3 5-15 mg/l, PO4 1-2 mg/l. Iron is also required in sufficient quantities so the plant keeps its beautiful green colour.
If these requirements aren't met the plant will stagnate soon and wither away.
Under optimal conditions, this stem plant can grow so fast it is likely to become a weed in the tank. It throws new lateral runners regularly, which tend to grow into other plant groups. Frequent intensive trimming is required to maintain its bushy form, or else it will show a rather irregular, random growth habit. Fortunately, trimming is easy. Just cut off the lateral or top shoots, throw them away or re-plant.
Its filigree growth habit makes L. madagascariensis a very suitable plant for the background of small aquaria, where it is easier to control anyway. Its almost transparent, dark green leaves enrich almost any aquarium layout.
