Nymphaea lotus 'grün'

The green tiger lotus, Nymphaea lotus 'Grün', is, alongside 'Rot', one of two colour forms of this water lily that are regularly found in the aquarium trade.¹ It has brownish-spotted blades of a rich light green, whereas those of 'Rot' are deep red.¹ With many plants in the trade, however, the cultivar cannot be determined with certainty, as their colour lies between red and green.² In western Cameroon the green tiger lotus inhabits flowing waters; the species is distributed across tropical Africa and Madagascar.¹

It needs a spacious tank, as under good conditions it quickly grows into a large specimen plant.¹ Among dense vegetation or in weak light it soon produces overlong leaf stalks, so space from its neighbours and strong light are important.¹² It only flowers after producing several floating leaves; their formation can be delayed for a long time by continually cutting out oversized leaves.¹
