Ottelia ulvifolia is a large aquatic plant with up to 50 cm long and 10 cm wide, roughly undulate to spiralling leaves that are a little transparent. The species name hints to its leaf form reminding a little of sea lettuce of the genus Ulva, a green marine alga.
This Ottelia is found in the African tropics and on Madagaskar, where it grows in different types of waterbodies.
This species has several forms, the most well-known of them is an aquarium plant with light green leaves that have a reddish brown marbled pattern or one of small horizontal lines (see fig. 1).
Ottelia ulvifolia is a great eyecatcher or solitary plant for high aquaria.
