Potamogeton perfoliatus is a very large pondweed, distributed in almost all the world but missing in South America. It is also found in stagnant and slow-flowing waterbodies rich in nutrients in Central Europe, at depths of 0.5 to 7 metres, and it is a characteristical species of the Potamogeton group forming the so-called pondweed belt in lowland lakes.
Since around 2005, Potamogeton perfoliatus has quite frequently been imported from Asian aquatic plant nurseries.
