This moss has only recently become known as aquarium plant. It was collected in a rivulet near Khao Sok National Park in Thailand gesammelt, and bryologist Prof. Benito C. Tan (Singapore) identified it as Taxiphyllum taxirameum. Jens Kuehne (Thailand) presented the species as new aquarium moss in an article published in the German aquarium/terrarium magazine DATZ.
T. taxirameum has an exceptionally large area of distribution comprising North, Central and South America as well as Asia. It was found growing partially submersed in Thailand. According to the description in "Bryophyte Flora of North America" (online), however, it is not an aquatic moss in nature but grows in shaded locations on soil as well as on silicate rocks and limestone.
The population of T. taxirameum from Khao Sok resembles Taxiphyllum barbieri. The shoots ramify moderately. For a moss it is a rather fast grower and it seems to be very undemanding. It attaches quickly to driftwood and rocks by means of its rhizoids.
